Another V-Day Under our Belts’

So, I got a message last night saying that someone is following my blog.  I actually came here and looked at it.  I got a little sad.  I love writing, I love my blog.  I have not written for a long time.  My Grandmother’s passing seemed to signal a change in my life that has not brought me back to what I love.  Writing.

We lost her, we moved my grandfather, we moved to a new house, work changed, got a puppy, got depressed, got on back on my meds, got my head better…  Here we are.

Looking at my blog made me want to write.  So, here I am.

So we are two weeks out from Valentine’s Day but I wanted to write about it.

Everyone knows something about the Day of Love, here is a little history.

Saint Valentine’s Day, also known as Valentine’s Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine,[1] is observed on February 14 each year. It is celebrated in many countries around the world, although it is not a holiday in most of them.

St. Valentine’s Day began as a liturgical celebration of one or more early Christian saints named Valentinus. Several martyrdom stories were invented for the various Valentines that belonged to February 14, and added to later martyrologies.[2] A popular hagiographical account of Saint Valentine of Rome states that he was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians, who were persecuted under the Roman Empire. According to legend, during his imprisonment, he healed the daughter of his jailer, Asterius. An embellishment to this story states that before his execution he wrote her a letter signed “Your Valentine” as a farewell.[3] Today, Saint Valentine’s Day is an official feast day in the Anglican Communion,[4]as well as in the Lutheran Church.[5] The Eastern Orthodox Church also celebrates Saint Valentine’s Day, albeit on July 6 and July 30, the former date in honor of the Roman presbyter Saint Valentine, and the latter date in honor of Hieromartyr Valentine, the Bishop of Interamna (modern Terni). In Brazil, the Dia de São Valentim is recognized on June 12.

So James and I have spent Valentine’s Day together for the last eight years.  In the beginning it was, you know, all about being together and what we would get each other and the next year about outdoing the last.

Now we just want to be together.  Don’t get me wrong, we aren’t complacent, it’s not that we don’t do things or want to do things, for each other it’s just times have changed…  We have a house this equals less disposable income for things like this.

So, at the last minutes (5:00 PM) on February 14th, 2014 James called me and said “wanna go to www.thetexaslonghorn.ca?”  Of course, since this is my FAVOURITE place to go…  I said “yes”.

With no reservation ON VALENTINE’S DAY, we set out…  I some how got my purse handle wrapped around the coffee James had in the cup holder and ended up pulling it over onto myself…  James exclaimed “well I guess we’re not going to dinner now…”  to which I replied “*%&^&*()$& RIGHT WE ARE!  I’ll just tell them I’m wearing eau de http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juan_Valdez”  He just laughed.

We drive from Etobicoke where he picks me up to Whitby.  Get in and find out there is an hour wait.  I am determined that I am having dinner here so we wait.

There are a myriad of 20 some-things, in cowboy/girl get ups greeting everyone who walks in.

As we are waiting a couple guys come in and the girl at the desk asks “Do you have a reservation?”  So he replies “yah, it’s under J Geils…”  I look at James he looks at me we grin…  She goes up and down the reservation list and the guy starts giggling…  She says “we don’t have anything like that…”  So he looks at his friend and says “maybe Michael Jackson?”  Then she clues in…  He’s fooling around…  EVERYONE over the age of 30 waiting for a table starts laughing…  This poor kid has no idea who J Geiles is…  Let alone that his Angel is a Centrefold!

She ushers this joker to the bar.

We wait…

We finally are called and head to our table, where Cherokee (apparently her real name, James asked) comes to serve us.  We order our drinks and she says…  “I have a proposition for you and I am only asking you ’cause I can see you are cool…”  Good saleswoman work there…  “We have a contest on today to see who can get the most full orders, I mean, alcoholic beverages, appetizers, meals, dessert and coffee.  If you order I will be in the lead…”  MORE good saleswoman-ship!  So we agree and order deep fried avocado bits…

I fell in love with them, James could not even put them in his mouth.  The fact that avocado is smooth to begin with is just exacerbated by deep frying it…

So then our dinner comes, chimichanga for me, all that deep fried cheesy goodness (I love whomever decided to put a burrito in some oil) and a steak and mashers for James.

Dinner comes…  It is lovely as always.

Singing to the music Miss Cherokee brings our dessert, vanilla ice cream with chocolate sauce.  I say “You know all the words to every song.”  She says “You caught me.  I really like this new country, I’m not so into the old stuff…”  So I begin a conversation with her about country music…  Well those of you who follow me on FACEBOOK know how that ends.

Anyway…  After eight Valentine’s Days together, we’re not the mushy mushy kind.  We still spend the night together, we still say I love you but in all honestly we do that every night.

It wasn’t a lavish night, it was a night we enjoyed, cover in coffee, with some giggles and holding hands as we walked to the car, while I sang and James said “Oh LORD, here we go.”

We went home and the boys

Brody and Arrow. The Boys. One of my personal pics.

Brody and Arrow. The Boys. One of my personal pics.

were waiting for us…  We took them out and then came in, got in our pjs and cuddled on the couch while we watched Wahlburgers.

Then it was off to bed so we could start our Saturday of fixing the stove, cleaning and other things that you have to do in life.

I hope you all had a great V-Day…  I know I did!

Time to Catch-up!

So I bet you though I had dropped off the face of the Earth or that I had been hijacked by a UFO…  Nope.  Just really busy!  My Grandfather was admitted to the hospital just after the new year and is still in there.

Between, doing my own job, covering for the new VP’s (un-hired assistant) spending most of my off time either at the hospital and/or making sure my Grandmother has what or is where she needs to be, completing two courses and having some semblance of a life my writing gave way…

I am sorry!  I have not written here, at my business blog Connie McCools Operations and Administration or at my professional blog The Televixen since Christmas.

So now, that my Gramps is doing better and doesn’t need constant attention at the hospital and I finally got my Grandmother approved to ride on Wheel-Trans, OMG! what an ordeal, I have some time to do what I love…  Writing for you.

One of my courses is complete and the other has one more test and then my exam…  I have two more college level courses next semester and I have also enrolled in  Athabasca University  in the Bachelor, Health Administration program.  I am just waiting to see how many credits I can get for my previous diplomas.

Since it is spring.  I am feeling a lot more like being outside.  Brody and I have been spending more and more time out there, which means that my lovely yellow lab, looks like a chocolate lab most of the time, from rolling in the mud.

While I have not been working at all outside of my day job and school, James has been working his butt off with his friend with the old truck and his cousin, finishing the basement.  We have not been on the lookout for houses lately because of all the other stuff going on…

We did go for a lovely dinner on Valentine’s Day at The Lakehouse Restaurant and then drove down to Niagara Falls (our fave place in the world.)

Since then there has been a lot of quite nights in watching TV…

I am still Tweeting for The Puppy Rescue Mission I will always find time for that…  You should head over and check out some of the Current Rescues they are oh so cute and always need our help.

I have been writing to a soldier in Afghanistan through Soldiers Angels and am finding it very fulfilling!  It’s the least we can do to make sure no Soldier goes unloved.

Anyway.  That’s my story and now that I am back look for some exciting new things…

Thanks for being patient and for coming back!

Happy Thanksgiving one and all.

So we left on Friday at about 5PM and I knew it was not a good time to leave to go on a long drive to the cottage on the Friday of a long week-end.

We sat on the 401 Markham Rd. through Courtice Rd for an hour and 15 minutes.  Then we decided to go north to Taunton, get on the 115 and then take seven to hwy 62.  Four hours later we arrived.

Upon arrival we baked an apple pie and watched Catch and Release.  James was not amused but I love it.

Bed came quickly.  Four hours of driving is tiresome.

We slept in quite a bit on Saturday morning and had a lovely bacon and egg breakfast then James headed out to Bancroft to get a few things I had forgotten to pack.  I seized this time to get some work done that I had been trying to do for weeks but just could not get to at the office.

So two job descriptions and one business proposal down and I moved on to more work on the time lines in my business plan for the First Impressions department.  By this time James was home.

I rounded out my work for Saturday with two chapters in my writing class and writing two class discussions to post when I am back in the land of the living and completed the second assignment.  Then I moved onto two chapters of Pharmacology and discovered that not only are the ACE Inhibitors that cause of my bladder issues that my SSRIs have something to do with the queasiness I have recently been experiencing.  Ahh!  The things you learn.

We cooked the M&M French Onion Soup that James picked up while he was out in Bancroft and we tried that for the first time.  I must say it was sumptuous and there is now a broccoli and loaded baked potato flavours in the freezer can’t wait to try them.  I may actually pick some up for lunch.  $2.50 a pop and seven minutes in the micro, can’t go too wrong.

We had a lovely mashed potato, fried mushroom and onion, rib steak dinner and then we ate the lovely apple pie with whipped cream.

While we did all of this we watched a Harry’s Law marathon on Global (the only channel we get) and I have decided I might actually like that show.

We stayed up as long as we could and made through half an hour of Saturday Night Live.  James went to bed I was half asleep on the couch.  James lasted in the bed for about 15 minutes then came running out saying there is something scurrying around in there.  I laughed at him and helped him into the middle bedroom.

We slept until about 6AM on Sunday morning when James announced his back was killing him and that is my queue to know that if he is not sleeping neither is I.  But the other thing that happens when we are not sleeping is Brody does not sleep.  So a walk in the dark at 6AM was in the cards.

Back home I curled up on the couch and fell deeply back to sleep.

At about 10AM James woke me up with a Bacon sarnie and tea.  I nice start…

James headed out again for somethings he forgot yesterday.  And I tucked into writing an article for submission to The Bark Magazine.

After that I spent sometime nursing a headache and reading more of my Pharmacology text-book.

I watched various episodes of The Simpsons which I truly think melted my brain and then Maid of Honour with Mc Dreamy and Mc Steamy came on and so I stopped to watch that.  James arrived home with McDonald’s chicken nuggets and BBQ sauce.  Oh how I love this boy!

More walks with Brody it is so lovely here we don’t want to stay inside.

James is napping as I write this and I am waiting for him to get up so I can put the ham and turkey in the oven…  Yes I am attempting to cook a turkey and at the cottage none the less.

I have to admit that I have never been much of a cook and never really wanted to cook.  But there is something in me right now that is wanting to nest.  Have home, cook for my family, be a mother, be a wife, be a home body.  I don’t know what it is but I was discussing this with my secretary about a week ago and she told me she is going through this too.  She is recently married and we simply deduced that we have each finally found that right person after all this time and our maternal clock and natural feminine instincts are kicking in.

Don’t worry peeps I won’t be turning in my office wardrobe and giving up my career for cooking backing day and night.  It’s just nice to know I might want it all…

I am sitting here watching 16:9 right now.  I am so loathed by the people on this show.  The first story was about the wild horses in Calgary and the fact that people find them to be a pain rather than a beautiful creature of nature that should be taken care of.  The government doesn’t class them as wild which would mean they could be protected they are classed as feral which means they are seen as vermin like the coyote.  People are shooting them and leaving them to die and the only fine that can be laid is a $10,000 monetary punishment and an 18 month jail sentence.  Even killing a deer out of season comes with a $50,000 fine.  The next story is about amazing children growing up with AIDS.  One boy was diagnosed with the disease at age five.  His mother shocked that her five-year old had AIDS questioned his father, who actually admitted to injecting his own son with AIDS tainted blood in order to kill him to avoid paying child support.  WHAT THE HELL HAS THIS WORLD COME TO?

Had a lovely visit with our neighbour Teresa.  It was her mother’s passing that I spoke about back in August that was affecting my sense of mortality.  As my former Art Teacher pointed out, it is hard to be in the generation watching the older generation pass away.  We talked about Terry’s feelings and we laughed and watched some TV.  It’s good to know that after all this time (we have known each other since before we were born.) we can still be that close.  I promised we would get together for dinner soon.  After all she only lives in Oshawa.

Anyway, it’s time to put my turkey in the oven and watch that for the next couple of hours.  Potatoes, stuffing, garlic bread and salad and turkey!  Mmmm my fave!

We are leaving the cottage tomorrow for the season.  We will not be back until next spring.  I am sad.  I love this place.  I hate to leave it.  But I know it will always be there when the snow melts, the ice goes out and the seasons change.

As a child Thanksgiving was always my favorite time to be at the cottage.  We would run around and collect leaves and sneak over to our neighbours place to dunk them in the wax that was set out for plucking the ducks that were caught…  It was hot in the cottage from the cooking…  The neighbours would come over we would all eat together.  20 of us.  It was the best of times.  We would have whipped cream wars and there was this once when I uncle and father tried to get a wasp’s nest out of the eaves…  Oh but that my friends (in the immortal words of Hammy Hamster) is another story.

I hope that no matter what you did you enjoyed your day and were thankful for something.  I know I am and I know that I have so much to be thankful for!

Sorry I have not written in a while.  I am now trying to get my business up and going, writing for another blog and studying Pharmacology and Writing for the Web as well as working full-time and being all things to everyone in my life that need me.  I promise I will make this blog a priority and am thankful that you are still reading my thoughts!

Be safe and see you all soon!

Why you Should not get a French Manicure Before Going to the Cottage!

On Friday June 24th, I sat in a massage chair and had my finger and toe nails painted all lovely and new.  Then on June 24th I left for the cottage…  Hmm!

After a New York Dolls, POISON and Motley Crue show at the Molson Amphitheatre in Toronto, James and I packed Brody into the car and up to the cottage we rode!  Making it there by 4AM on June 29th.  Spent the entire first day dozing in and out of sleep and reading.  Second day, finished my book Saving Cinnamon which I mentioned to James as he returned from the outhouse.  To which he exclaimed “THANK GOD!  Now you can stop driving me crazy telling me everything that happens.”  (Oh how I love him!)

So then I started Until Tuesday! A Wounded Warrior and the Golden Retriever who Saved him!

Then I sadly realized I was still three chapters behind in my school work so I spent sometime watching the 1st season of Supernatural!  I am a very good procrastinator….

I watched a few seasons of NCIS.  This is James’ favorite and we have all the seasons on DVD.

By this time it is Thursday June 30th…  We have walked the dog several times and eaten very sparingly so that the washing of dishes is not happening too often…  After all I still have an intact French Manicure on my fingernails!

At 1235AM on Friday July 1st, Gramps shows up!  Raring and ready to go.  No really I mean it, he was not one bit tired and we young-ins were falling all over ourselves to get to bed.  Then the best happened.  After only four hours of sleep he rose again at 6AM and woke the dog up!  Hmmmm!  Guess that means EVERYONE was awake!

It was on this morning that James discovered the Chipmunks that eat our of your hand.  We named them “No-tail-dude” and “Long-tail-dude” for what is probably obvious reasons.  NTD was very gentle and had a conniption when James left ten almonds on the rock for him to pick up.  Low and behold all ten went in his pouches and off he went.  LTD not so much….  James exclaimed at one point…  Be careful of LTD he BITES!  LOL!!!!  So there started the feeding ritual…  Each morning James would go outside with his peanuts or almonds and watch the chippies!  This also became the period of “keep the dog away from the chippies!”

Friday night we had some Fireworks.  Was fun and old friend Teresa came over to watch.  We left the scardy dog inside and turned off the lights so that he would hopefully calm but noooooo…..  Apparently the fear of fireworks was greater than the fear of Gramps and his walking stick (this is no connotation that my Grandfather does anything untoward with the walking stick, just that Brody is terrified of sticks in particular) because we came back inside to find Gramps and the dog, tucked in bed together!

James decided to make a trip to Bancroft and while there spend $500 on new tires for my car and an alignment…  This was after he put $200 worth of breaks on my car on the Tuesday night while my sister and I were at Motley Crue!

It was lovely weather wise hot but not humid.  Oh ya!  BRODY WENT IN THE LAKE ON HIS OWN!  WE DIDN’T HAVE TO COAX HIM!

Gramps fished for a while off the shoreline.  I taught them how to do Zumba to Gramps’ “Gypsy Music” and James fished.  The only fish that was caught in the five days we were there was one sunfish, which ’caused James to yell “Babe!  Can you come out here please?”  And when I got there, he held the fish dangling from his rod in front of me, so that I could take it off and throw it back in the lake!  LOL!!!!!

Brody got away twice and I did tell him that if he did it one more time I was not coming to look for him.  To which both James and Gramps exclaimed….  “THAT’LL BE THE DAY!  Don’t listen to her Brody!”

I have also developed a nice liking to cooking and did most of it while we were there….  except the BBQing.  We discussed that it was funny to me that in Canada we eat stuff that comes off a BBQ and in the USA they eat BBQ that comes off a grill….  Hee hee!

So hence the title of this blog.  Between cooking, washing dishes, going in the lake, feeding chippies, watching fireworks, chasing a dog on the lose, reading 1.5 books and watching 5 seasons of TV….  a week after I got my French Manicure….  It’s gone!  So…  It’s probably best to never get one before going to the cottage again!

Oh yah and I finally did get down to hitting the books!  I am now ahead one chapter (so I read four!)

All in all it was a GREAT time off.  Nice to be away with my boys and to spend time with Gramps.  In fact I had such a lovely time I cried last night before I went to bed because after only five days away…..  I really missed the cottage.

To me the cottage is a refuge!  A place I have gone almost every summer of my life.  It’s special…  Especially when your Grandfather exclaims that the DVD you bought him specially because it is about the Avro Arrow is “BORING AS HELL!”

Don’t Worry! Just be Happy!

So I have noticed over the last…  oh life time…  there are FAR too many people out there concerned with what other people have and what other people are doing.  They are so concerned that it takes up their every thought and soon they become horribly caught up in measuring themselves, what they have, what they want, including their family, against everyone they come in contact with and what they have, want and their family!

Once they start doing that they somehow convince themselves that EVERYONE has, more, bigger, better that they have and they become incensed, feel that there is some kind of injustice happening to them and create in their brain a complex by which they feel that they are hard done by and that someone owes them something.

Well I have to admit I used to be like that.  When I first joined Facebook and hooked back up with some friends, I certainly felt like well…  They had houses, they were happily married, they had beautiful children, they had THE LIFE.

Hmmm.  Sometimes pictures are a little deceiving.

Then I told myself that I needed to stop worrying about what everyone else has, is doing, looks like, acts like and I HAVE to be happy to be me.

After all what do I not have in my life?  When this is what I have…

  • A gorgeous boyfriend who loves me and treats me like a Princess.
  • A handsome dog who is healthy and worships the ground I walk on.
  • Two cats that at 13 still act like kittens.
  • Grandparents who took me in at my darkest moment and have been a god send in my entire life.
  • Jennifer and Randy who saved my life.
  • My sister and mother.
  • Diane and Dean who have known me and seen me through.
  • My family here and overseas.
  • A great job that pays my bills.
  • A place to lay my head every night.
  • Doctor’s to keep my head straight.
  • School to learn from.
  • My beloved iPhone.
  • My volunteering.
  • TV and a PVR!!!!!!!!
  • I could go on and on and on.

I love my life.  I love my little family.  I love my extended family.  I love my job.  I love my friends (old/new/online/in person).

I am just happy to be me.  Once I stopped caring about what others had and looked at what I have and looked to me for happiness, my life changed and I was happy.

I saw the good in things I had “hated” before.  I am for once content.

I still want a house to have my own space and well if someone wanted to give me a million dollars I would not say no….

Think about it.  Are you truly happy or are you measuring yourself against someone else and making yourself unhappy?

I would love to hear your comments.

And now….  Something to make you laugh!

Not Tonight Sorry, I have a Headache!

No really!  Honestly I do.  I woke up with it and have not been able to shake it all day.  It’s because of this lovely Alberta clipper coming Ontario way.  The pressure.

So this got me thinking.  What exactly is a headache?  Is is my brain that hurts?  Is it my skull that hurts?  Is it the nerves?  What?

So here is what I have found.  A Headache or cephalgia (technical/clinical speak) is a symptom of a number of conditions of the head and neck.

NO SHIT SHERLOCK!

Most common types.  Tension and migraine.

The brain in itself is not sensitive to pain, because it lacks pain receiptors.

Headache often results from traction to or irritation of the meninges and blood vessels. The nociceptors may also be stimulated by other factors than head trauma or tumors and cause headaches. Some of these include stress, dilated blood vessels and muscular tension. Once stimulated, a nociceptor sends a message up the length of the nerve fiber to the nerve cells in the brain, signaling that a part of the body hurts.

So now I know it isn’t my brain, it’s my muscles or by blood vessels.  Since I suffer from Hypertension and have to take an ACE Inhibitor, I am more susceptible to my blood vessels being irritated!  GREAT!

OK, the next thing that pops into my feeble, but not hurting brain is…  Can dogs get headaches!?  Apparently the answer is yes AND they occur the for the same reason’s as our headaches.  Well duh LAG!  Of course they have muscles and blood vessels!  Why wouldn’t they?

But how would we know?

This worries me.  I can’t help Brody if he is hurting!  ARG….  more irritation of my blood vessels!

So now I am praying for snow, which is something I never thought I would utter, but once it snows and the weather pressure passes, I will get some relief.

Saturday is grocery shopping day and No Frills has DOLLAR DAYS on and then we are going to look at houses so I don’t care if it snows.  Sunday will be an at home day while James works and goes to see his friend Steve C play with his band.  I have some work and some laundry and some PVR to catch up on.

But GOD above if you are there, please stop this head thing!  It’s really annoying!

OKey Dokey, it’s midseason and just happens to be a Tuesday!

That means a blog about what what…?  Ahhh!  Yes, my VERY favorite thing…  After Brody and James and the colour orange and…

Oh ya!  TV….

So all the mid-season shows are coming on starting with Pretty Little Liars on January 3rd…  Well I watched it and even James watched it.  Over top of my iPhone and between beating the iPhone Cribbage application 56 games out of 59…  It was great.  suspenseful, lots of foreshadowing many red herrings I am sure.  Lots of “oh it’s her…”  and “No it’s gotta be him…”  Only a couple of minutes later to be followed by “Welllll it could be that one….”  Anyway it has Lara Leighton in it as well as Holly Marie Combs.  So I will watch it till it is finished.

Now “V” starts tonight and as I posted on Facebook I am so excited I am singing “La Cucaracha!”  I know what does the Cockroach song have to do with V?  The same as I can learn Cantonese from my GPS!  LOL!!!  It’s just me….  Anyway have a listen it’s a fun little song!

So back to “V” we get to see what happens to the captured and witness Anna\’s vengeance!  Ohhh can’t wait…  May be a Miss Vickie’s and PEPSI night for TV.  Guess I will give James the iPhone again!

So American Idol is coming back on January 19th and America’s Next Top Model on February 23rd…  I think they are both in about season 192…  Will you be watching…  I am not sure I will.

Then Kitchen Nightmares comes back on January 21st.  YOU KNOW I WILL BE WATCHING.  Loves me some Gordon.  Did any of you catch the Food network marathon over the holidays of Private Chefs of Beverly Hills?  I was a little addicted but now I cannot find it.  What happened to it….?  Anyone know!?  Drop a comment and tell me if you hear anything about it.

Well you all know that my new obsession is the Kardashians…  Well the new Kourtney and Kim Take New York starts on January 23rd….  I can’t wait.  I have just really decided that I love this family and their dynamic and the fact that they fight hard but they truly love harder.  I wanna be an honourary Kardash!

So now some new shows….  The Chicago Code, with Jennifer Beals…  Gonna give it a try.  Here’s what IMDB says about it “Detective Jarek Wysocki, one of Chicago’s toughest cops, struggles to clean up the town’s violence and corruption.”  We’ll see.

OMG!  OMG!  OMG!!!  CRIMINAL MINDS SUSPECT BEHAVIOUR I am soooo excited can you tell, it is to debut on February 16th following my one and only fave…..  Criminal Minds the original the one with Hotch!  Ahhh!  My life will be complete.

Then the Celebrity Apprentice and Dancing with the Stars are coming back in February too, for their 192nd season….  As with AI and ANTM I might just give them a pass.

That seems to be all for the new stuff, now…..  When do my Vamps come back!  God DAMN it!  I have waited long enough…  And my Grey Docs….

Lets see.

  • Grey’s January 6th
  • Blue Bloods January 7th
  • NCIS January 11th
  • Criminal Minds January 12th
  • Hellcats January 25th
  • Vampire Diaries January 27th

These mixed with my Animal Planet section of TV like, Pitbulls and Parolees, The Haunted, Last Chance Highway, The Pet Psychic….  Then the History Channel is bringing back Ice Pilots and James now has me addicted to UFO Hunters (although it freaks me out a little bit…)

OH!  And Bethenny Getting Married is starting and then the Housewives of Atlanta Season 3 and well the Housewives of Beverly Hills, and God knows I have to watch Gail V-O’s Princess…

Dear God!  I need help!

Ahhhhh!  Life will be back to normal!
